It has been estimated that a well-trained dog will have a vocabulary of up to 100 human words, so this animal may understand perfectly well that “dog catcher” is an unwelcome offering.

However, experts note that dogs also respond to tone of voice, body language, eye movement and other subtle signals to interpret human communications.

Chaser, a Border Collie in South Carolina, is thought to hold the world record; researchers at Wofford College reported that Chaser knew the distinct names of 1,022 objects – more than 800 cloth animals, 116 balls, 26 Frisbees and 100 plastic items. Credits:
